In the land of cult cars, only one rates higher than the Lancer Evo.
The king of the kids is Godzilla, but the Skyline GT-R is still months away from Australia and way beyond the Mitsubishi master-blaster on the price lists.
For a lot less money you can get similar fun, as well as a bold, boxy boy's toy that looks as tough as it goes.
And the new Evo wipes the Subaru WRX. And the Impreza STi.
There is a lot more technology than ever before in the Evo, including a paddle-shift twin-clutch gearbox, but the basics are the same as always. A high-powered turbo engine and all-wheel drive in a compact four-door body draped with wings and things to advertise its place in the go-fast world.
The latest Evo is much more sophisticated, as Mitsubishi began with a bigger and more-rigid body to improve everything from crash safety to cornering grip. It has great seats, great brakes and a great sound system.
But it is thirsty, the tank is too small, and the hard performance edge can get tiring if you just want to dribble through the traffic to work or take a long interstate run.
People who like the Evo will love the new one. For the rest of us, it's a nice toy but not something to keep.

The Evo deserves to be the car of the year for 2008 for the technology advances of an all-wheel-drive system with twin clutchs at less than half the price of European luxury cars with similar features.

The new Lancers has enough horse for a compact body. Good cruising car for long trips.

Car of the Year? Depends entirely on what the criteria is ... one-eyed fans will abound, though, no doubt.

The Lancer, because of all the added features that you would normally see in a family sedan but at a small car cost
