Holden Sportwagon SS

This car puts the sex back into station wagons, so to speak.

We certainly could have done with a flash piece of kit like this when we were courting the young ladies at the drive-in. Sadly drive-ins are now pretty much defunct as are station wagons.

However, Holden's brave attempt to keep the wagon dream alive should be applauded.

It is an eminently suitable long-distance tourer and hauler with an enormous flat-floored cargo area, plenty of airy cabin space and comfortable seats. Perfect for the summer driving holidays.

The V8 engine is smooth and powerful and capably interpreted by the smooth six-speed transmission.

However, the 13.9L/100km thirst and aging interior (yes, even after just three years), count against it.

  • HAVE YOUR SAY - WHICH CAR DO YOU THINK SHOULD WIN?

I have a 2005 VZ sedan thats done 225,000kms and have had no problems with it, however my sister in law has a new Omega Sportswagon company car and has had heaps of trouble with it after doing 30,000 kms. She had the preivious VZ executive wagon before and it was sold after hitting a huge 350,000kms with no problems (it was just 3 yrs old). She has also said that the space is horrbile as well as the blind spots compared to her VZ wagon and would prefer to drive a 350,000kms VZ executive before jumping happily into the new sportswagon. I have to purchase a wagon myself, in order to care for my grandmother, but I am definately going to look for a VZ executive wagon before even going into Holden to purchase a new sportswagon.

Range, comfort, stability are amongst many features that appeal to me, and I know, many other drivers who yearn for a vehicle that is not only good to drive and own.  But seems to give and share a special feeling that it enjoys being on the road and becomes a willing and lively partner.  Good rust-proofing, (for Australian conditions), durability, reliability, comfort and pricing.  I want one, thanks.

As i travel a lot in my work, i get to drive a lot of hire cars. Recently on a trip to cairns we were given a sportwagon. There are 3 reasonably sized blokes in our crew so we had 3 full size suitcases, laptops, and a esky. We couldnt believe that it was such a struggle to fit it in the cargo area, absolutly useless, guy in the back seat had to share it with esky and laptops.I have heard lots of comments on the bulky A pillar but how about that C pillar, in angle park, nose in, as lots of Aussie country towns are, it was bloody dangerous trying to reverse out and see oncoming traffic. Above all, it was very thirsty, gearbox sounded like it was having its own party . Regards,Russ

Station wagons are NOT defunct! Only this one, because the boot’s HALF the size of the last one! That’s why nobody wants one! Try finding a nice VZ wagon for cheap now - they are well sought after as the last of the ‘huge holden’s’... These are a joke, can you fit a double bed in one of these? LOL i dont think so… you can in a VN-VZ wagon. These are useless!
