Volkswagen Golf R wagon on the cards for Australian return

The 2015 Golf R Wolfsburg wagon proved a big success.

Hottest wagon under $60k a good chance for Australia after the facelifted VW Golf R hatch arrives in August.

The success of the limited-edition Golf R wagon in late 2015 has prompted a push from Volkswagen Australia to add the hot wagon as an ongoing member of its line-up.

Currently you can only buy the Golf R in hatch guise, and the updated version of VW’s fastest model could bring the wagon back when it arrives in Australian showrooms in August.

VW Australia spokesman Kurt McGuiness admits that the local arm is still working on securing the wagon version for Australia, but is confident it would succeed given the 1500 examples brought here in high-spec $58,990 Wolfsburg edition trim sold out before it arrived in late 2015.

It’s also unclear whether it would return as another limited edition or an ongoing member of the line-up, but the local team is keen for the latter.

The Golf R wagon would occupy a relatively unique space in the Australian market, with the Subaru Levorg as its nearest rival, and sit above the Octavia RS and Mercedes CLA250 Shooting Brake performance-wise. Only the much more expensive AMG CLA45 Shooting Brake would trump it in this size segment.
