2015 Subaru WRX | new blue for Australia's favourite unofficial sports car

The new 'Hyper Blue' is sprayed on 250 WRXs for local deliveries.

Australia's favourite sports car is not a sports car at all.

It's not the Toyota 86 or Subaru BRZ, not the all-new Mazda MX-5 - not yet, anyway - and definitely not a Ferrari 488 or Lamborghini Gallardo. It's actually the Subaru WRX.

It might not qualify with a convertible roof, or a tight two-seater cabin, but the WRX is definitely a sporty driver's car that's a regular bang-for-your-bucks pick with the CarsGuide crew.

"Apparently you have to be a coupe or convertible to be a sports car. I would have thought a decent dose of performance would have helped," the managing director of Subaru Australia, Nick Senior, tells CarsGuide.

Looking at the numbers, a total of 1936 WRXs have been delivered to the end of July.

The 'official' sports car leader, according to VFacts industry figures, is the 86 at 1846. The Hyundai Veloster, more of a cute coupe than a true sports car, is next at 1558.

The Subaru WRX sports car is officially classified as a 'small car' on the official VFacts charts

Senior says sales of his WRX sports car are up 7.7 per cent this year, even though it's officially classified as a 'small car' on the official VFacts charts. And one-third of WRX sales in Australia are the STI hotrod.

To emphasise the appeal of the WRX, Subaru Australia has just introduced a new blue for the car. It's much lighter than the traditional 'rally' blue and known as 'Hyper Blue'.

It's sprayed on 250 WRXs for local deliveries but Subaru is also extending the coverage to another of its cars, the BRZ that does qualify as an official sports car.
