My son needs a cheap car for a couple of years and is keen to buy a Toyota RAV4 from a trusted colleague. This is a one-owner, well-looked-after vehicle, straight body with no damage, with a full service history at 227,000km for $4000. A friend has suggested that at this distance and with AWD it could mean it wouldn't have many more kilometres before we might have expensive transmission repairs. Do these vehicles usually have transmission failures and if so at how many kilometres? I intend having the car assessed by the mechanic we have been with for about 20 years.
The RAV4 is generally bulletproof, so if the family mechanic clears it then it should be a good choice.
