I have just spent $5000 getting a balance shaft replaced on my Mercedes-Benz ML350’s V6 engine. The car has done 120,000 km and my wife loves it, but it is a great car with one big flaw. Mercedes put a balance shaft on the timing chain in the V6 engine, which also drives four camshafts. Adding a balance shaft just causes more vibrations and premature wear to the timing chain. I would like to warn buyers of secondhand cars of this problem and to urge them not to buy the early second-generation model.
There are lots of reports about wear on the balance shaft and the timing chain. It is an issue and anyone contemplating buying a 2004-2006 model should be warned.
