It was almost embarrassing to read Hyundai Australia boss John Elsworth squirming when trying to sound enthusiastic about the renaming of the ix35 to Tucson. I'm sure the Europeans, particularly the French, will be queuing up for a car named after an American city. It's almost as cringe-worthy as wearing a T-shirt with an American university name on it. The ix35 badge is global. Using the names Tucson, Santa Fe, Cherokee, Patriot, Wrangler and Laredo on the other hand is American branding and, quite frankly, the US isn't the flavour of the month right now so it is bewildering why anyone would want to Americanise a global brand.
It's actually a backflip, as the ix35 was originally called the Tucson in Australia.
