    Golf DSG gearbox

    Recently, the DSG transmission in our 2005 VW Golf FSI developed a very rough gear change when shifting up through the lower gears. The car has done 71,500 km and has been regularly serviced by our VW dealer. The dealer told us it was due to oil in the wiring in the transmission and quoted approx $2000 to repair. After the repair the dealer advised me that they were not happy with the end result and had to consult VW for advice. The real shock came when we were then told the transmission required replacing at a cost of $10,800 plus labour, this after a 20 percent discount on parts from VW. I have looked at other options, such as a good secondhand gearbox from another VWworkshop, but we would still be out of pocket approx $5600, including the original repairs of $1900 which we have been asked to pay. It is a substantial amount of money and I believe a gearbox with regular servicing should last longer than 71,000 km. VW are also aware of issues with the DSG gearbox. Should VW pay to replace the gearbox? And should I pay for the dealer's incorrect diagnosis?

    Oil contamination of the wiring loom is a common problem with the DSG gearbox, one that VW is well aware of, but I'm guessing that the dealer has guessed at the cause of the problem and arrived at the wrong conclusion. I would refuse to pay for the work done in arriving at that diagnosis. Why should you pay for their incompetence? With respect to the gearbox itself, I would ask VW to cover the costs. They will possibly make you an offer of part payment, it's then up to you to accept or reject it. You are correct in believing the gearbox should last more than 71,000 km, but from the evidence we have it doesn't seem to. Your case should be a warning to anyone considering buying a VW with the DSG gearbox.
