There seems to be conflicting advice on what viscosity engine oil to use in the one-owner 2000 Toyota Corolla Hatch AE 112R we recently bought, which has done 130,000 easy kilometres and runs smoothly. The factory Toyota manual sort of says 10W-30, but has an air temp chart showing recommended viscosity that includes 20W-50 for -7 to 38 degrees C, which is sort of everyone, isn't it? Most oil company websites say 10W-30 or 10W-40, but Valvoline, which I use mostly on my older vehicles, says to use XLD 20W-50 Classic or XLD 20W-50 Plus. What do you think I should use for mainly short hops on a daily basis, clocking up no more than 10,000 km a year?
Any of those oils would be perfectly ok for your car. If you are doing really short trips and want the engine to warm up a little faster, and reduce wear during that period, you could use a 10W-40 oil, but I would use a 20W-50 oil as a good all-rounder.
