Cruze transmission problem (Part 10)

I set off from Sydney early this month on a trip to the Gold Coast to visit family. Halfway the revs in my automatic 2010 Holden Cruze would randomly go all the way up to above 6000rpm. It would only last a few seconds at a time and it would happen every 20 minutes or so. Rather than continuing on I took the car to the dealer in Tamworth where it was determined that the gearbox was malfunctioning. I had the option to either replace the faulty parts, which would cost me around $4100 or replace the entire gearbox for $4800. Replacing the entire gearbox also gave me a two-year warranty, so I decided to have the gearbox replaced. I was told it would not be ready for almost a week, which was quite upsetting as I had a friend from Germany with me. We found a way of getting to the Gold Coast, but this meant I then had to hire a one-way car from the Gold Coast to Tamworth to pick up my car from the dealer. Is there anything I can do about this now? I know the warranty has run out, but my car only has 52,000km on the odometer and should not be having such problems.

Yes, you could approach Holden and present to them a case for reimbursement of the cost of repairs. Transmission problems are common with the Cruze, we have reported numerous in CarsGuide and it’s not an unknown to Holden. The company has in many cases replaced the transmission free of charge, so I think you would have a good case for getting your money back. Having had the repairs done by a Holden dealer should help you with your case. I doubt that you would be successful in getting any extra costs back, such as the hire car, but you could try.
