Skoda Octavia RS TDI wagon: week 4

I look at the odo readout. Blink. Look at it again.

Still it says 4.5 litres per 100km – the average diesel sippage of our Skoda Octavia RS TDI on a 310km open road run out of Sydney over the Blue Mountains and beyond.

After three weeks of city monotony, we finally had the opportunity to stretch the bright blue Octavia’s legs – though sticking scrupulously to the somnabulent speed limit.

No doubt about it, the highway is where the blown diesel’s leaner running ability comes to the fore.

Not that it hadn’t distinguished itself in the urban crawl, returning under 10-litres per every day. A notable, but not remarkable, advantage over the Octavia RS which runs a turbo petrol engine of the same capacity.

The open road, though, is a whole different thing and yet another reason why one wonders if this Czech cousin of Volkswagen isn’t one of the smarter choices of car for Australia’s wide open spaces.

Still haven’t seen another one on the road, though …
