Mercedes-Benz S-Class spy shots

It's one of the first prototype cars for the all-new S-Class coming in 2013. Benz has just renewed the mid-sized E-Class and the compact C-Class is next on the list for renewal, although there are a range of other tweaks coming - including an S-Class engine overhaul before the end of the year.

Carparazzi says the camouflaged S is one of the earliest development mules for the all-new car, running the existing chassis with some lengthening and widening work. Final styling of the car is expected to be influenced by the F700 concept of 2007, although no-one at Mercedes-Benz is making any official statements about the S-Class project.

Under the hood, Mercedes is expected to introduce the new ‘MoVe' - modular V6- and V8 - engines, with both direct fuel injection and turbocharging.

Benz already has a mild hybrid in the S-Class lineup but the new car should picked up the package from the Vision S 500 plug-in hybrid concept, pointing to a luxury limousine that can sprint to 100km/h in less than six seconds but still return fuel economy in the 3.3 litres/100km range.

On the performance side, Carparazzi says the 6.3-liter V8 from the S 63 AMG will be replaced by a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8, but all V12 engines are likely to be dumped.
