Barina rubbish no more

  • By Paul Pottinger
  • Carsguide
image Will critics cease rubbishing the new and improved Barina?

We live in world of change, so it?s perversely reassuring that Holden?s so-called Barina is no longer rubbish.

By an official measure, at least.

This dating-almost-back-to-the-millennium crap can – a Daewoo Kalos in mild disguise – has had its crash safety rating bumped up from a bottom of the ladder two stars from five (the worst in an Australia-available new passenger vehicle) to a Commodore-matching four.

Which is nice.

But why did this need to happen? Why the sudden volte face?

Because, according to Holden, there was nothing wrong with the dingy Daewoo dunger in the first place. At least that’s what it claimed back in oh-five when it succeeded the comparatively brilliant Opel Corsa (the 2001 Wheels Car of the Year, no less) in rebadged-as-a-Barina guise.

This is despite the unanimous verdict among the motoring hack collegiate that the so-called Barina was a pile of pus. It’s just that certain of this fraternity neglected to write that.

“It’s a nice package backed up by Holden,” one of these trilled unctuously.

Yet I remember the gripless and squealing at no provocation standard tyres, the manual shift that moved like a breadstick being stirred through porridge, the steering that would have disgraced a pre-PlayStation video game, the hostile relationship between front and rear ends when in motion, and the unrivalled air of cheap nastiness that pervaded the whole construct.

Equally one recalls the seething barely post-pubescent Holden operative assigned the task of taking me to task for permitting this to be said in Sydney’s Sunday Telegraph; a sensation uncannily reminiscent of the time I was menaced by a yapping poodle.

Yet more indelible is the memory of a more senior Holden operative chuckling delightedly during the launch of yet another Daewoo (the dismal Epica) that great numbers of girls were attending dealer’s events designed to sign ’em up to a Barina. Talk about a Kalos attitude.

So if the bogus Barina was critique-proof, why the need for improvement?

Could it be that Holden – heaven forbid – wasn’t being perfectly Francis when they decried the original ANCAP verdict on the Kalos/Barina? Or have they just now stumbled on this realization, which means the company is seven years behind the rest of the world?

  • I agree with Mark’s statement - you people need to get a life and realize that vehicle builders try to give value for money and all car makers regardless of brand source their build parts from around the globe. The brand name is all that sells the product - not one is built better than the other.

  • The only way Holden can fix the issue is by scrapping what already is, well, Scrap. I’d rather spend an extra $3,000 or $4000 on a rebadged Opel Corsa D rather than spending $13,990 for a car that’s worth something along the lines of $5000.

Holden’s making a joke out of us all by flogging this crap it’s time they stop the act and step up the small car credibility they once had.

  • Alex of brisbane- once again- Looks isn’t everything- resale value of the Jazz is far superior than the Holden Barina

I agree with anonymous “This car is so ugly, I wouldnt want to drive a car with a smiley face on it everywhere… “

    Who else agrees?

  • Well to put it bluntly it looks better, less like a Kalos but it won’t stop me from hating it!!! For many years we were purchasing the fantastic Spanish built XC Barina sourced from Opel and then in 2005 Holden said: Nuh, bit pricy, lets see what GM Daewoo’s got that we can resurrect from the skip bin. Holden’s small car stance, in my opinion, died in 2005 when they sacrificed safety for pricing. In 2008 despite changing the appearance and level of occupant protection in the MY 09 Barina, it still won’t change that big mistake they made back in 2005. You can’t just admit to it having only a 2 star safety rating and not doing anything about it for 3 years.

  • Dear Innerwestie: Geez, I hate it when people use my favoured online pseudonym. I should sue. As indeed should you, if a manufacturer has failed to honour its obligations. As to our alleged failure to commit journalism, it’s true that all of six months has passed since we reported Holden’s poor performance in the inaugural JD Power Australia reliability survey. And as to the Barina being better built, I’d rather collide in a Commodore.
    P.P

    ——————————————-

before going on a rant about how badly built (in addition to the remarks about poor safety levels in the pre-updated barina), carsguide should really be focusing on a far more urgent issue that has received too little direct attention by the carsguide team.  The issue concerns the extremely poor quality of Holden Commodore vehicles and the refusal of Holden to honour their warranties.  My bet would be that the Barina is better built than the Commodore.  Come on Carsguide…why don’t you try bringing ‘journalism’ back in???

  • Hi Paul,

my comment responds to an article by Paul Glover who stated that the FED’s $6b doomed the falcons future - erroneously added to your article by your moderators - the article in question drew significant condemnation including accusations of Palm Greasing by holden.

  • If you guys can accept korean made barina, then Kia rio would be a better choice.  It is also korean made car with the rear drum brake but price is more competitive and it comes with 5 years warranty. 5 drs base model Rio is just 13,990 drive away.

  • Some old banana, different skin. It might now have a better crash performance, but with pathetic dynamics, poor tyres, no ABS it won’t avoid the accident in the first place.

Try a Mazda2, Ford Fiesta or VW Polo. Much better cars.

PS Ford has got runout Fiesta’s for $12990. Where else are you going to get a German built car for that price? Nowhere.

    Phil C. Posted on 14 November 2008 9:39pm
  • If you were in a collision in a Barina with a small child on a tricycle you would be better off being on the tricycle. Daewoo have always built crap cars using old out of date technology. GM were mad to buy them out years ago.

Umm … I think you’ll find that DIDN’T state “that the Holden is at the beginning of its lifecycle and Falcon at the end”. Is there another person with my name and log-on working for this site? Because nothing of the sort you suggest has ever appeared under my byline. What ARE you on about man?
    P.P

    ——————————————————

    Paul,
how can you state that the Holden is at the beginning of its lifecycle and falcon at the end. Surely the G6E is not the end of the AU series but the start of a new series. All road tests sofar has shown the new Ford offering to be significantly better than the Commodore; from style to fuel efficiency and sophisticated mechanics - and a 5STAR ANCAP rating that commodore could not deliver even though the stuffed more airbags into it - as with other articles - you’re just pushing a line despite the facts

  • Alex of brisbane- The honda Jazz has a better engine, fuel economy and safety than the barina.  Jazz is better than barina- at least it is not a rebadge korean car

Vincent of melbourne Posted on 13 November 2008 2:35pm
  • I would have been happy with a barina when i was a ‘kid’ , I would have been stoked if my parents brought me any car.
I had to save up $400 for my first car, a 68corolla with drum brakes all round.
The funny thing is, I actually learned to drive.

stewart of Sydney Posted on 12 November 2008 8:00am
  • What do you people want? The Barina/Kalos/Whatever is a vehicle built to a price, it is a consumer item designed to be driven for 5-10 yrs then discarded. If you want a great drive with safety, buy an astra. If you want a car to go for 10-15 yrs buy a toyota.
Some people cant afford to spend 20+k on the next class of motor car.You mob will be the first to complain if holden still sold the opel sourced barina as it would be too expensive.
Who cares if the thing comes from korea? the next fiesta is comming from thailand, jazz as well. Stop being a bunch of snobs!

Daniel of adelaide Posted on 11 November 2008 9:51pm
  • Dean of maitland, that test is OBVIOUSLY done at least 100km/h into a SOLID object.
Todays ANCAP testing is done at 64km/h into a deformable barrier.
Any car subjected to those conditions would perform similarly (especially old cars).

    Karl Posted on 11 November 2008 9:18pm
  • not just drum brakes, but no ABS either (its optional). Let alone ESP.

Go to Youtube - Holden Commodore worst car crash test - and be suprised at how shit some ‘Aussie’ cars are, an absolute joke if it was not so tragic.

If you’re Scrooge enough to buy a Barina ... Oh,  you didn’t, did you? I see. You may rue the minutes spent on my blog. Pray you don’t come to rue a rather more significant loss, one more than likely to occur if the Barina is involved in a serious shunt.

So sub me, already. “Puss” was a pun (the car’s for cats, girlfriend). The other thing was a typo. Head of class for you.

Does that make you “irrationally Italian”? I’m sixth gen’ Sydney, actually. As for the Clarkson comparo ... yawn. You ought to read more widely. Try a psychology text. It might explain the mindset that reads a double entendre into “straight”.

get a grip mate, its true, the Barina sucks big time !!!

go drive a mazda 2, ford fiesta, mitsubishi colt, honda jazz, and then the crappy barina/kalos and tell me that you would buy that POS for your kids over the other much better small cars.

  • Paul Pottinger?

How quaintly British, in both it’s alliterative and aristocratic sense.

It’s no wonder than that I can smell Jeremy Clarkson in this Top-Gear styled critique.

It’s just a shame that PP sees JC as worthy of emulation, but fails dismally in the process. Is there any reason as to why a motoring journalist can’t be straight (in the non-sexual sense, although there’s nothing wrong with that, Paul) with an audience and cut through the purple prose?

funny thing is the last barina had

TWO OUT OF 5 STARS FOR CRASH TESTING ( honda jazz 4.5   mazda 2 had 5 stars )

i sure as heck know   I DONT!!!!!!!!!

  • It is amazing what few airbags can do to a two star daewoo.  There should be a review of the NCAP safety ratings.

Look, daewoo barina has always been rubish and will stay that way.  I hope tomorrow you won’t try to convince us that Daewoo Leganza AKA Holden Epica is a better car than a camry or mondeo.

King Charlie of Here Posted on 10 November 2008 5:12pm
  • It’s amazing that people actually bought the previous iteration of this car.  A lot of them.  It’s as if slapping a Holden badge on a Daewoo automagically makes a car better or safer.  It was a pile of crap and still is a pile of crap.  Airbags do not and never will make up for lack of structural integrity and controlled crumple zones.  I certainly would not let my offspring anywhere near this tin box, even though it may appear to be a good buy at first glance.

Mark Tall of South Brisbane Posted on 10 November 2008 4:42pm
  • So Paul, was the Barina as bad as your English ?.  “.....was a pile of puss” ?  A pile of cat was it ?  Surely you mean ‘pus’ ?

What about   “So if it the bogus Barina .....”      “If it the “?    What does that mean ?

Daniele C of Brisbane Posted on 10 November 2008 3:52pm
  • So here we have an article today by Paul Pottinger about the Barina.  I guess it is appropriate that an article that is designed to rubbish the Barina is a load of waddle.  So the Barina is a so so car.  Well knock me over with a feather!

I would rather my son or daughter drive a cheap new car with air bags that an old hand me down fuel guzzler with drum brakes.  Is the Barina built to race at Bathurst; no.  Is it built to meet a cheap transport need; yes.  Seriously, you would think Holden was actually Darth Vader the way some writers comment on the Barina!

It would also be helpful if alleged writers put some facts in their article rather than just dribble.  The article however did have one bright spot; the attack on the writer who actually did not agree with Paul.  How dare someone offer a different opinion!  Maybe he or she had an independent thought and was not a lemming.  Maybe the writer even knew something about cars?

Honestly, is the Barina such a death trap ‘pile of puss’?  And rather than just ranting, maybe some constructive real world criticism would help.  We are talking about a cheap small mode of transport and not a space shuttle.  Is it really worse than the 1970’s and 80’s cars that still litter our roads in Sydney?  The whole article simply looked like a bad hair day outpouring with no facts and demonstrated that Cars Guide is either out of issues to cover constructively or needs writers who can construct a useful article and not just a diatribe.

Sadly, I can not get back the wasted minute I spent reading Paul’s worthless rant.

Mark McDonough of Sydney Posted on 10 November 2008 3:40pm
