Rockers and Rollers

The frontman for AC/DC is the last person I expected to have a major-league car crush.

Then I tuned to Top Gear television and listened as Brian Johnson told Jeremy Clarkson all about his motoring passion, before cutting one of the fastest laps in the British program's 'sensible car' shootout.

This week the picture became crystal clear when Johnson's first book, 'Rockers and Rollers', hit my desk. It's a terrific little paperback, filled with fun.

Johnson, who has done a bit of racing in his time and owned some great cars, sprints through his motoring history in a series of short little cameos. Most only amount to a couple of pages, but they paint a clear and entertaining picture. He also passes judgement on what he believes are the world's best looking cars, takes a swipe at Eddie Irvine, talks about his early history with bands and then the breakthrough with AC/DC.

Johnson has crammed a lot of stuff into a little book and that's what makes it so enjoyable. You can pick it up, read a couple of pages, then put it down without losing track of a long and complicated story or worrying about the character development or the plotline.

It's the sort of book which will appeal to a lot of car people, and a lot of AC/DC fans, and many more people who just like something light and enjoyable to read. Some of the chapter titles are Learner, Take a Back Seat, Angus Young, Cars and Music, The Greats, Wow! and even Teacake. You get the picture.

My favourite story is built around AC/DC's European driver, a bloke called Gunther. And the way it finishes is a cracker, with Gunther telling the only joke he knows. "He said you must always remember: the bigger the German, the smaller the swimsuit. I still laugh at it," says Johnson.

His book is a rocking good read and well priced at $35 from major bookstores through Simon & Schuster.
