Ok, so now they?re bringing out an Australian version of Top Gear. Eeek!

I’m always sceptical about these sorts of things. Don’t get me wrong, I hope it succeeds, but there have been so many instances of popular television shows ruined by second-rate copies, that I fear my cynicism may be justified.

Think about it, when was the last time you were at a party and someone said “geez did you see that new Seinfeld copy, it’s so much better than the original!”, or “the American version of the Office kills the English one!”. You simply don’t hear it, and if you do, you realise as the party rolls on, that the person who uttered the ludicrous claims is clearly insane.

The TV shows mentioned have become immensely successful because of the people who star in them. The original, English version of Top Gear is exactly the same. With an irreverent, humorous look at motoring world, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have become such a polished unit, that they now command an audience of over 350 million worldwide. A staggering figure considering the vehicle for their talents is (ahem) the vehicle.

It’s hard to fathom anything coming close to matching its popularity. And I think this is where most television producers go wrong. I don’t think we should ever try to make an exact copy of a successful TV show.

But there is nothing wrong with adapting a successful framework and adding local features and personalities. Hopefully this is what happens with Australia’s Top Gear. Considering there is a distinct lack of watchable car programs here these days, I’m sure it shouldn’t be too difficult to make this one work.

  • As long as it is as politically incorrect and irreverant as the BBC original they have a chance. We have kind of become a nanny state. What worries me is how all the safety “experts” in this country have made it politically incorrect to be seen doing the “wrong” thing. For instance you would hear protests if anyone drove a car fast or if someone proclaimed the enjoyment they derived from it. In the workshop while the Top Gear crew do their loony mods to cars you can just people protesting about how it sets the wrong example.
Lest anyone think otherwise I believe very strongly in safety, both on the road and at work. I don’t condone hoons or people being lax about safety anywhere. There is however a fine line between fun and responsibility, where larrikin meets bank manager that we have not, during recent times, done a good job of staying on.

  • I know its slightly irrelevant but its the best example I can think of.
Aston Martin. utterly beautiful but otherwise useless.
Jaguar XK. also utterly beautiful and slightly less expensive.

When one argues the Jaguar looks like the Aston Martin as a bad thing, I shake my head in denial. If Jaguar managed to copy the Aston, then well done!
    Imitation is the greatest Flattery.

Let us hope this works out the same for Top Gear Australia.

Personally, I just want a Top Gear like the one in Britain, but one who’s Cool Wall makes sense.
I want more Ford’s and Holden’s (more Holden than Ford) being drooled all over and I want to be able to predict the darn cool wall!!!!

  • I think I’d avoid the Australian version at all costs - the BBC version works well because the people they have employed are brilliant (not just the on screen guys, but even their camera crew and production are first rate), they tell it like it is and are able to look beyond biasses (not like Australian Holden/Ford only types) and the show is distinctly non-commercial (unlike Channel 9’s Car Show).

And who would they have presenting it? If Kyle Sandilands is anywhere near it I don’t want anything to do with it.

    Not a good idea!

  • I wound not mind an Australian version at all, it would be a good for the consumer and motoring enthusiast.
It will also be a great form ( if it will be publicised) to emphasise the revenue raising tactics of our State Governments and the lack of driver education because the general motoring press have no implementation and cohesion within each other to take it up to the next level.

  • The reason why Top Gear is so successful is that it is produced by the BBC and is not bound by advertorial. The networks that produce car shows in Australia would talk-up a LADA if the company sponsored the show. I hope the ABC is producing it.
