Science proves cars make men drool

Yes, it’s true. Men start salivating when they see a great car.

New research by a US professor has found that men shown photos of exotic sports cars generated more saliva – presumably collected by some lucky research assistant.

Published in the latest Journal of Consumer Research, the study by Professor David Gal from Northwestern University found that when he told men to imagine their dream date, a group that was shown sports cars drooled more than the group who were told to imagine getting a haircut.

In his paper, A Mouthwatering Prospect: Salivation to Material Reward, Prof Gal says the response is a sign that people can actually ‘hunger’ for desirable objects.

The research also claims that the salivation is increased if the car is linked with an image of an attractive women. But then, that’s probably not news to the publishers of most ‘gentlemen’s magazines’. Or to the teenage boys who used to make them best-sellers before the internet decimated their profits.

And it’s a combination that made the Lamborghini Countach LP400 S a schoolboys’ legend in the 1970s. But that car would have had the same impact even without the draped flesh.

We’ve put together a gallery of some of our top saliva-prompters. Which cars make you drool? Let us know below…

  • A good looking car can be compared to a great painting or sculpture. In many ways, some cars are sculpture, and some of the current designers can be compared to painters of yore in the way they cause great emotions in men, and woman. Some will see it as ‘just a car’, but some people see paintings as ‘just a picture’.

  • Maybe it’s a self protection reaction but exotics don’t make me drool in the least. Usually I’ll salivate for a car I’m not an eternity from affording and therefore is an ownership possibility.
At the moment I crave a Porsche Cayman S (even if a few years old) which provides relative practicality, can cope with being a daily driver and isn’t too “out there” while providing performance not far off the exotics

  • This is the same rationale that tries to explain why blokes drool
over a good looking girl in a leather minidress. The real reason they drool is because she smells like a new ute!

  • Pictures of girls in car mags actually sh*ts me off half the time. It’s really annoying when I’m trying to get a better look at say, the rim of the car, just to find there’s some chic splashed across and blocking my view. If I want to look at that sort of stuff I’ll buy FHM or something - I look at a car mag for the cars.

  • Aston Martin ... drool maker! Others include Lexus LFA, some of the Lotus new cars, Maserati Quatroportte. I’m not sure if everyone appreciates, but classic car can be very eye-catching too.
