Lamina concept car aims for 1275km per litre

The Lamina car design hopes to brings fresh ideas to the future of automobiles.

An experimental design team hopes to usher in new advances in car design and environmentally friendly travel with new ideas.

A team from California Polytechnic State University in the US has developed a prototype vehicle that weighs just 45kg.

The tiny weight of the Lamina - latin for blade - has been achieved by making the aerodynamic shape able to structurally support the load of the drivetrain.

The all-in-one approach to the platform and body extends to the mechanical set-up, with the Cal Poly Supermileage Vehicle Team developing an engine and drivetrain in a modular design that can be removed in a single block.

The team will enter the Lamina in the Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2012, to be contested at the end of March in Houston, ironically the capital of oil-rich Texas.

The Lamina will be aiming to beat an astonishing 1275km per litre fuel economy target.  Don’t bother reaching for your calculator - it’s equal to 78ml of fuel per 100km.

That makes even the most frugal car we’ve driven lately look ridiculously thirsty, but unless Cal Poly can show us where the audio system and cupholders are going to fit, the Lamina will probably bomb out in the US.

  • I don’t care about global worming or fuel consumption, I increased the engine size by an extra 4 cylinders to V12 supercharged.

Most cars haven’t been built this way since the 70’s - sure there are some specialty vehicles like 4WDs built with a ladder frame and a bolt on body, but uni-body vehicles are the norm, and have been for a LONG time.

  • Hey jaric you idiot, passenger cars haven’t had separate body/chassis for many years. Look up the term monocoque retard. The concept has only been around for 70+ years.

  • hmmmm, let me guess, Americans havent heard for 3 wheeled scooters or motorised bikes that use around 1.5 litres per 100kms? LOL, or rickshaws? Its good that they are not claiming that they invented wheels as well..hahhaha

  • As the author states, a cars’ economy with fuel usage going up with weight.  All those cup holders, A/C, power windows, power seats, GPS, and other comforts all add to the amount of fuel required to cover a certain distance,  If we made vehicles with the options available to us in say the early 80’s, with the improvements in fuel efficiency in engines today, your milage could be double what it is today! You pay for your comfort and safety with reduced fuel economy.

  • Considering the crap we currently get shoveled with this is a great idea. Each new car at the moment is heavier, costlier nad uses more fuel then the last. Enough. We want cheaper, lighter n more fuel efficient.

  • Clearly it is not designed for real world usage, but to highlight the concept of utilising the body of the vehicle as the primary chassis, as opposed to how cards are made now with a body that is bolted onto a seperate chassis. Using new polycarbonite materials that can be shaped to form an integral aspect of the vehicles structure is a highly desirable part of engineering, it saves money, resources, weight and frankly just makes plain sence.

  • I think this is highlighting the concepts behind new possibility of material usage and new avantgard approach to car construction, not a viable production car. Concept cars is what companies do before they introduced new tech. So settle down people. All the tech you see now have some stage been shown in concept form which was once consider outlandish like bonnet mounted airbags and radar auto cruise control and thermal night vision.

  • The car industry needs to work something out for commuters… something lighter and narrower to improve road cost, fuel and congestion… Until then I’ll stay on my pushbike…
